Children in the UK can now be prescribed so-called "sex change" drugs that will delay puberty in order to prepare the youngsters for a sex change operation.Kids as young as nine years old, who believe they are trapped in a body of the wrong gender, will be allowed to take the prescription drugs (hypothalamic blockers) until they have their sex change surgery in early adulthood.
"I think many people will be horrified at the thought of a nine-year-old being provided with a drug that effectively stops them developing and maturing naturally," Conservative MP Andrew Percy told The Daily Mail.
Hypothalamic blockers stop the normal development of sexual organs so less surgery is required if the child decides to have a sex change operation when reaching adulthood.
The drugs, which are given in a shot in the stomach, suppress testosterone and estrogen.
According to The Telegraph, "In boys this prevents the voice from lowering and the development of facial hair, while in girls it stops the menstrual cycle and breast development."
Clinical trials of the drugs were given to children with “gender dysphoria," ages 12 to 14.
“We’re talking about stopping puberty in the normal range of puberty, so I guess the younger age might be nine or ten,” Dr. Polly Carmichael, who led the trial, told The Daily Mail.
