IRS emails revealing the targeting of conservative groups destroyed
A controversy erupted in 2013 when it was revealed that the former head of the tax exempt division of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) had singled out conservative groups for special scrutiny.
The IRS was targeting selected groups and their tax-exemption status based specifically on their political leanings, especially anyone with affiliation to the "Tea Party".
An investigation is ongoing, but now this week the IRS is claiming that all evidence of damning emails is gone, as ex-IRS official Lois Lerner’s hard drives, relevant to the timeframe, have been thrown away.
Convenient.
Politico writes, "The time frame is significant because the tea party targeting began in spring of 2010, and Republicans think if there was a smoking gun connecting the Obama administration to the IRS treatment of conservative groups, it could be found during that period."
Indeed, "as many as six IRS employees involved in the scandal also lost email in computer crashes, including the former chief of staff for the acting IRS commissioner", Politico reveals.
The destruction of the hard drives was described as "standard government procedures" by officials, and it’s hard not to agree...
In a world where American administrations preside over missing minutes of Watergate tapes, missing CIA torture tapes, $2.3 trillion missing in Pentagon accounts announced by Rumsfeld the day before 9/11, and missing evidence of the alleged death and water burial of ’America’s Most Wanted’ Osama bin Laden, don’t expect the Lerner emails to resurface. They’re gone - someone made sure of it.
And that’s pretty standard government procedure.
