The man accused of shooting and killing nine people in a downtown Charleston church on Wednesday night is from the Columbia area, according to law enforcement sources.

Law enforcement is pursuing 21-year-old Dylann Storm Roof, of Eastover. An active manhunt is taking place in several locations in the Midlands and across the state.

Public records show Roof was most recently arrested in March in Lexington County on drug charges. According to a spokesman for the Lexington County Sheriff's Department, he was booked in the detention center on February 28 and again on April 26 after being arrested by the Columbia Police Department.

According to Lexington School District One, Roof attended White Knoll High School for at least part of his 9th grade year.

Roof is described as a white male, with a bowl cut haircut, slender/small build, grey sweat shirt, blue jeans and clean shaven. He is considered armed and dangerous.

The shooting, which law enforcement has classified as a hate crime, took place at Emanuel AME Church on Calhoun Street in downtown Charleston around 9:00 p.m.

Charleston Police Chief Greg Mullen said officers arrived to find eight people dead inside the church. A ninth victim was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

According to officials, the shooting occurred during a prayer meeting at the church.

Early Thursday morning, authorities released several surveillance images of Roof and his vehicle.

Editor's Note: Despite that no information has come out about the motivations of the suspect or if he has associations with any group, MSNBC pin this on "White supremacy", "Hate groups" and other conservative groups in South Carolina. MSNBC nor SPLC knows nothing about the motivations of the killer, yet they jump to conclusions in a classic "Problem-Reaction-Solution" move.

The article also manage to squeeze in: "The Confederate flag still flies in the grounds of the State House."

Gasp, how dare they hang on to their Southern Heritage!

Others also took the opportunity to blame guns. "Far too many guns out there" said Charleston mayor Joseph P. Riley Jr.

Also note that this guy couldn't signal his South African Boar flag any stronger. It couldn't be much bigger on that jacket really.

Top flag is a South African Boar flag (1928–1994).

Bottom seems to be a flag of Rhodesia (1968–1979).

"Let no crisis go to waste" as Rahm Emmanuel said.
