Two people were killed in the Paris suburb of Trappes Thursday morning in a knife attack which was ended by French police fatally shooting the assailant, according to media reports.

A 35-year-old man who shouted Allahu Akhbar (Allah is the Greatest) before stabbing several people was shot dead by police Thursday morning. Identified in French media as ‘Kamel S.’, the killer was convicted in 2016 for “the glorification of terrorism, reports France’s BFMTV.

He had previously been an employee of the Parisian mass transit system, and drove taxis.

The two victims killed by Kamel are further reported to be members of his own family, leading French police to suspect — despite his radical background — that the incident may have been based on a family feud.

Besides the sister and the mother of the dead attacker who were both killed, there were several people seriously injured, including one who was airlifted to hospital in critical condition. After being shot by police, the assailant took cover in a building after being shot and died of his wounds inside.

The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack shortly after it hit the headlines, however, police have not yet decided whether to treat the incident as terrorist-related or not.
